What Are AA and NA Meetings?

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a free, peer-led fellowship for people recovering from alcohol addiction. Founded in 1935, AA operates on a 12-step model emphasizing personal accountability, spiritual growth, and community support. There are no dues, fees, or professional affiliations — the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. AA meetings are held in churches, community centers, hospitals, and online across all 50 states and in over 180 countries.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is the counterpart program for those recovering from drug addiction of any kind — not just narcotics. NA was founded in 1953 and uses the same 12-step framework as AA. Like AA, meetings are free, peer-led, and open to anyone affected by drug use. NA meetings are available in thousands of cities across the United States.

Both programs are recognized by leading health authorities including SAMHSA and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) as effective components of long-term recovery support. Research published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews has found AA participation associated with higher rates of continuous abstinence compared to other interventions.

Types of AA Meetings
  • Open Meetings — Anyone may attend, including non-alcoholics, family, friends, and healthcare professionals
  • Closed Meetings — For members only; those with a desire to stop drinking
  • Speaker Meetings — A member shares their personal story of addiction and recovery
  • Discussion Meetings — Group discussion on a recovery topic or AA literature
  • Step Study Meetings — Focus on working through the 12 steps
  • Big Book Meetings — Study of AA's foundational text
  • Online Meetings — Zoom or phone meetings for those who can't attend in person
What to Expect
  • Most meetings last 60–90 minutes
  • You are never required to speak — listening is enough
  • Attendance is anonymous — first names only
  • No sign-in, no fees, no formal registration
  • Meetings often open and close with the Serenity Prayer
  • Coffee and informal conversation are common before and after
  • You may be offered a sponsor — a more experienced member to guide you through the steps

When Meetings Aren't Enough

For many people, AA and NA meetings are a cornerstone of sustained sobriety. But meetings alone are not a substitute for professional addiction treatment in cases of severe physical dependency, co-occurring mental health disorders, or multiple relapses. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), addiction is a chronic brain disorder requiring evidence-based clinical treatment — not a moral failing or a willpower issue.

If you or someone you love needs more than meetings, our free helpline connects you to accredited rehab centers that accept your insurance. We verify benefits before any referral, and same-day admissions are often available.
