About AA & NA Meetings

What Are AA & NA Meetings?

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are free, peer-support programs that help people recover from addiction to alcohol and drugs. Founded in 1935, AA pioneered the 12-step recovery model that forms the foundation of most addiction treatment programs today.

Meetings are held in churches, community centers, hospitals, and online — every day of the week, at all hours. There are no dues, fees, or requirements to attend. The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking; for NA, a desire to stop using drugs.

Our directory lists 85,000+ free AA and NA meetings across all 50 states, updated regularly. Use the filters above to find meetings near you by day, time, and type.

Types of AA & NA Meetings

Anyone can attend — alcoholics, addicts, family members, and those curious about recovery. No requirement to speak.

Closed

Limited to those who identify as alcoholics or addicts, or those who think they may have a problem.

A leader opens with a topic from AA/NA literature, then invites others to share their experience.

Step Study

Group works through the 12 steps together, often using the Big Book or other literature.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About AA & NA

Yes — AA and NA meetings are completely free to attend. There are no dues, fees, or membership requirements. A small voluntary collection may be taken during meetings to cover room rental and literature costs, but this is entirely optional and never required.
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) focuses specifically on recovery from alcohol addiction, while Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is for people recovering from all types of drug addiction including prescription medications. Both use the 12-step model and have similar meeting formats. Many people attend both programs.
No. You are never required to speak at any AA or NA meeting. Many newcomers simply listen and observe for their first several meetings. When you are ready to share, you can do so — or simply say you will just listen today and no one will pressure you.
Most meetings open with a reading from AA or NA literature, followed by a speaker sharing their story or a discussion topic. Members then share their experiences, strength, and hope. Meetings typically last 60 to 90 minutes and close with a group prayer or affirmation. Newcomers are warmly welcomed.
Yes. Open AA and NA meetings welcome anyone who wants to learn about the programs, including family members, friends, and those who are unsure about their relationship with alcohol or drugs. The only requirement for AA is a desire to stop drinking; for NA, a desire to stop using.
Yes. Since 2020, thousands of AA and NA meetings have moved online via Zoom and other platforms. Our directory includes online meetings — look for the "Online" badge when filtering. Online meetings follow the same format as in-person meetings and are equally effective for many people in recovery.
AA and NA are powerful tools for recovery, but some people need additional professional support. If you or a loved one needs medical detox, inpatient rehab, or intensive outpatient treatment, call our free helpline at (844) 561-0606. We can help verify your insurance and find accredited treatment centers near you.
