What are the Different Types of Drug Addiction Treatment Programs?

Published April 16, 2020 By Addiction Helpline America

Since the approach to drug rehabilitation treatment programs is continuously evolving, most of them don’t seem to fit the conventional classifications of drug addiction treatment. For instance, inpatient drug rehab features programs that differ from what’s being offered by outpatient treatment modalities.

The Different Types of Drug Addiction Treatment Programs

Long-Term Residential Treatment

This provides inpatient drug rehabilitation services 24 hours a day in a non-hospital setting. In most cases, these facilities make use of the therapeutic community model that allows recovering addicts to have planned lengths of stay that range between 6 and 12 months. This type of treatment seeks to cultivate a sense of personal responsibility and accountability to address the person’s social and psychological deficits. Structured activities that are specifically designed to help the individual gain insights on damaging self-concepts, beliefs, and destructive patterns of behavior. This helps them to adopt new constructive ways to interact with the people around them effectively. Many inpatient drug rehabilitation centers offer comprehensive services that include employment training and various support services. Furthermore, their programs are customized according to the resident’s needs.

Short-Term Residential Treatment

The programs that are being offered are based on the intensive 12-step approach that’s conducted within a hospital-based setting for a period of 3 to 6 weeks. Since the duration of treatment is short, it requires an extended outpatient therapy, as well as the recovering addict's participation in a self-help group, to reduce the risk of relapse.

Outpatient Treatment Programs

This type of modality is more affordable than other treatment options. Although its services vary in terms of types and intensity, group counseling remains to be a significant component in most of its programs. This is an ideal choice for people who have extensive social supports and jobs.
